Horizons at Norwood 5K Race and Fun Run

Indulge in fine food and drink, music and festive company on Friday, April 28th; then work it off at the race two days later! This year’s race is on Sunday, April 30th. The 5K starts at 8:30am and the Fun Run at 8:40am, at Norwood School in Bethesda, Maryland. The5K's fast, flat course winds through a beautiful Potomac neighborhood with both runners and walkers welcome. The one-mile Fun Run remains on Norwood's campus - perfect for younger runners and families. Can't make it out? Our Virtual Race lets you race forHorizons wherever you are! Join hundreds of Horizons supporters for this fun, family-friendly event. It’s a great way to get outdoors, get active, and support a great cause!

Ready to make a splash? Friday, April 28th come celebrate Horizons’ nationally-recognized program, enjoy cocktails and indulge in a fun evening with friends while supporting local students. This year’s event we'll be honoring our amazing teachers with special recognition to an outstanding educator and our founder, Kiki Sweigart. Kiki had the vision and insight to bring Horizons to our first site at Maret School and has served as its Site Director for an incredible 17 years! Join us for the Cocktail Reception at 7:30pm or the VIP Reception with Kiki Sweigart at 6:30pm at the Hotel Monaco's Paris Ballroom.

Join us for a morning of family fun around reading, creating and community! Local author and artist Rachelle Barrs will inspire readers, writers, and illustrators as she shares her book Neil and His Airplane to the Moon.  Following her fun and interactive presentation, students and families will enjoy hands-on STEM-themed Build-A-Book activities and refreshments in the Atrium. This free event is sponsored by Horizons Greater Washington and Maret, and all are welcome.

Norwood 5K to Benefit Horizons

This year marks the five-year anniversary of the Horizons Greater Washington program at Norwood School located in Bethesda, Maryland. To celebrate this milestone and continue to build awareness of the Horizons program, Norwood School will be hosting an inaugural 5K race on its campus and neighboring streets.  The 5K starts at 8:00 a.m. and a 1-mile fun run will start at 9:15 a.m.  Online registration is available through April 8, 2015 with an early registration discount available through February 28th.  Participants who register by March 12, 2015 are guaranteed a race t-shirt in the size of choice. All participants registering after March 12 will receive a race t-shirt on a first come, first serve basis.  For more information, visit the registration page.  You can make a difference and have fun - come join us!

Build-a-Book comes to Maret on Sunday, February 1, 2015.  Join the celebration from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for an event of reading featuring Jake Tapper, an anchor and chief Washington correspondent at CNN.  Mr. Tapper wrote the forward for The Complete Peanuts: 1993 to 1994.  Participants are invited to make fun, take-home crafts and to help build a book! Build-a-Book returns to Norwood School on Sunday, January 25, 2015. Join us from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for a lively celebration of reading featuring Pamela Duncan Edwards, the author of numerous popular children's books including Livingston Mouse, Honk! The Story of a Prima Swanerina, and Barefoot: Escape on the Underground Railroad. Ms. Edwards will read from her books and discuss the writing and illustration process. Brown is a writer and an award-winning mixologist based in Washington, D.C. His writing has been published in a variety of publications, including The Atlantic, The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, and The Washington Post.

This year, Horizons is serving over 300 low-income public school students on campuses of three independent schools. Horizons challenges students academically, socially and physically, inspiring them to become life-long learners. Beginning in Kindergarten, Horizons supports children throughout their elementary and secondary school years, building enduring learning communities.
