Through Horizons Greater Washington's programs, summer learning loss is being mitigated, and on average, academic skills are increasing and students’ attitudes towards learning are positively increasing.
HOW WE WORK
We provide full days of hands-on educational enrichment and summer fun with dedicated professional teachers and high school student assistant teachers, with a 5:1 student to teacher ratio.
Our curriculum emphasizes reading, language arts, math, computer science, art, music and daily instruction in swimming, as well as weekly field trips.
We make a 9-year commitment to each student enrolled in our program, and through our Saturday program, students can participate in weekly enrichment programs.
CAUGHT IN THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP
Students caught in the achievement gap are six times more likely to drop out of high school and have a 51% chance of being unemployed. The achievement gap costs the nation $260 billion per year in healthcare costs, and decreased lifetime earnings.
BREAKING THE CYCLE
The gap in academic performance between low-income students and wealthy students in Washington, DC is one of the highest in the nation. The consequence of this achievement gap is that only 60% of the region's low-income youth graduate from high school. Only one in three goes to college. Horizons helps students beat these odds. 100% of Horizons' students graduate from high school and 85% go to college. The students are breaking the cycle of poverty.
